State Library of Queensland's IY2019 'Word of the Week' for Week Three is 'gangurru' from the Guugu Yimithirr language of the Cooktown Region – it means ‘kangaroo’.
This week's word of the week was suggested by Dora Gibson, IKC Coordinator, Hope Vale!

Gangurru is the first recorded word for an Aboriginal language and was written down by Lt James Cook with an accompanying sketch by Joseph Banks while the Endeavour was being repaired near Cooktown.

State Library of Queensland invites you to celebrate the 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages as we raise awareness of the rich diversity of Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

Join the conversation as we post a new word for each week!

Week Three 15-21 January 2019.
