Year of Indigenous Languages Film Fest 2019

An Amazonian shaman searches for a sacred plant with two scientists; a spiritual master who converses with nature appears and reappears like a ghost in different regions of the Cordilleras Mountains; and a Nahuatl family struggles as they prepare to honour the death of a family member. These are just some of the main premises of several films that will be shown at the Year of Indigenous Languages Film Fest 2019, which will be held at the Cinema Oasis movie theatre in Bangkok on 27 September 2019.

Co-organized by the Embassies of Colombia, Mexico and Peru in Thailand, as well as UNESCO Bangkok, the festival will present several feature and short films covering 72 different indigenous languages from three countries in Latin America.

In addition to the films, the festival will also feature presentations from representatives from UNESCO and the Embassies of Colombia, Mexico and Peru in Thailand, as well as Francisco Lopez Barcenas, a Mixteco indigenous activist and writer from Mexico.

The festival is being held on the occasion of the International Year of Indigenous Languages 2019, and aims to raise awareness about the threats facing indigenous languages, which constitute up to nearly 60% of the world’s approximately 7,000 spoken languages.
