Ságastallamin – Telling the story of Arctic Indigenous languages

In this exhibition, we present the region, the peoples, and the languages that they speak. We look at some of the challenges facing the languages in the past and in the modern day. We also learn about some revitalization efforts taking place around the circumpolar Arctic, made possible with the help of new laws protecting the languages and their status, state-funded institutions, regional corporations, community-based initiatives, and modern technology.

The exhibition is a collaboration between UiT The Arctic University of Norway University Library and the Arctic Council Indigenous’ Peoples Secretariat.

The exhibition opens Monday September 16 at 3 PM. At the opening event there will first be a cultural performance and speeches, and then a guided tour of the exhibition.

This collaborative platform was established to enable the community of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL 2022–2032) to share events, activities, and resources. The content published on the platform is the responsibility of registered users and does not commit the Secretariat of the Decade (UNESCO) and/or the Members of the Global Task Force for Making a Decade of Action for Indigenous Languages. Please note that the platform has been inactive since February 2025 and no longer accepts new uploads. While work is underway to provide an updated solution, the Secretariat of IDIL 2022–2032 remains available for any inquiries at: indigenous.languages@unesco.org.
