IV Conference “Functioning of Indigenous Languages, Folklore, Literature, and Traditional Culture of Indigenous Minority Peoples of the North, Siberia, and the Far East in the Context of Globalization” took place at the House of Friendship of the Leningrad Region, dedicated to the memory of the scholar and northern researcher Maria Yakovlevna Barmich.

On January 29, 2024, the IV Conference “Functioning of Indigenous Languages, Folklore, Literature, and Traditional Culture of Indigenous Minority Peoples of the North, Siberia, and the Far East in the Context of Globalization” was held at the State Budgetary Institution of the Leningrad Region “House of Friendship of the Leningrad Region,” dedicated to the memory of the scholar and northern researcher Maria Yakovlevna Barmich.

The conference took place in a combined format, both remotely and in person. In the in-person format, employees of educational and scientific institutions, other social institutions, language activists, and representatives of public organizations of the Chukotka, Yamalo-Nenets, and Nenets Autonomous Okrugs, Krasnoyarsk and Kamchatka Krai, Tomsk, Sverdlovsk, and Leningrad Regions, as well as Moscow and St. Petersburg, took part in its work. The participants of the conference were greeted by the Chairman of the Committee for Local Self-Government, Interethnic, and Interconfessional Relations of the Leningrad Region, Lira Burak.

During the conference, the Association of Indigenous Minority Peoples of the North, Siberia, and the Far East and the House of Friendship of the Leningrad Region signed an Agreement on Cooperation in the Development of Conditions for Preserving Interethnic Peace and Accord, Exchange of Experience in Harmonizing Interethnic Relations in the Leningrad Region. From the House of Friendship, the Agreement was signed by Acting Director Sergey Novozhilov, and from the Association – Vice President Nina Veisalova. This is the second agreement with the Association; the first was signed in 2018 in Lodeynoye Pole as part of the celebration of the International Day of Indigenous Peoples.

The organizers of the conference were: the Association of Indigenous Minority Peoples of the North, Siberia, and the Far East of the Russian Federation, ANO “Center for Traditional Knowledge and Languages of Indigenous Minority Peoples of the North, Siberia, and the Far East,” the Regional Branch of the Association of Indigenous Minority Peoples of the North, Siberia, and the Far East of the Russian Federation in St. Petersburg, and the Association of Teachers of Indigenous Languages and Literature of Indigenous Minority Peoples of the North, Siberia, and the Far East.
