At this critical time for all Indigenous communities films performed in Indigenous language remain largely excluded from the mainstream.
For the first time Indigenous film makers are presented in an exciting program exploring the historical and contemporary perspectives of Indigenous Language on Screen.
In a showcase of 8 features and 8 shorts, this curated program will be driven by the desire to offer audiences the first wide-ranging retrospective of Indigenous language cinema on screen. From trailblazers to the influential Indigenous language films on-screen today this presentation will expose how the lens is a transformational tool for linguistic empowerment and self-determination.

But who are the filmmakers working with Indigenous languages? What obstacles do filmmakers face telling stories in their heritage language? What place for Indigenous language cinema within the mainstream?

Responding to these questions Indigenous Language On Screen- A Retrospective presents a panorama of films that probe the social, political and historical conditions that have nourished a rise of Indigenous narrative within the planetary medium of cinema.
