Exhibition Yuri Knorozov’s Collections in the Russian Museum of Ethnography. To the 100th Anniversary of the Birth tells about the first period of professional activity of the outstanding Russian ethnographer, historian, linguist Yuri Knorozov. He worked at the State Museum of Ethnography of the Peoples of the USSR from 1949 to 1953, a difficult time when the Museum was being restored after the II World War. It was then that Yuri Knorozov made his landmark discovery – he deciphered the writing of the Mayan Indians, immediately gaining worldwide fame.
The exhibition presents exhibits related to various aspects of Yuri Knorozov activities in the State Museum of Ethnography of the Peoples of the USSR: ensuring the preservation of exhibits, recording and describing museum valuables, building temporary exhibitions and expositions, collecting ethnographic collections, etc. Of particular interest are unique archival documents that mark turning points in the life of Yuri Knorozov.
