Festive Event Dedicated to the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples

The Center of National Cultures in Nadym organized a festive event dedicated to the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. Seven hundred people became participants and spectators of this holiday.

As part of the program, the organizers held a concert with creative and amateur artists participating. They performed national songs of the peoples of the North (Nenets, Khanty, Komi-Zyrian).

Creative amateur groups dressed in national costumes met the guests and saw them off to a chum (a temporary dwelling used by the nomadic reindeer herders of northwestern Siberia of Russia, consists of reindeer hides sewn together and wrapped around wooden poles that are organized in a circle). Before entering the chum, they performed a “purification ceremony”.

In the chum, the guests tasted the ethno-menu and freshly prepared drinks from the “pop-up” bar, and learned about the beneficial properties of the presented treats made of local fish and wild plants. Berry vitamin cocktails and fish delicacies contributed greatly to a good mood of the guests.

The diversity of the unique and distinctive culture of indigenous peoples is a part of the world’s cultural heritage. This event held within the framework of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages was aimed at drawing attention to the problem of the loss of indigenous languages, the need to preserve, revive and popularize these languages and cultures.
